Piggily- Wiggily

Vincent, the young boar, returned to the farm a couple of days ago. Vincent is a perfect example of a Montana mix of fast growing pigs (IE: a little of this and a little of that: his father was a Red Wattle cross. His mother is a Yorkshire/ Duroc mix). He is 11 months old and has been visiting a young sow at another small family farm until recently.

Boars are hard to find. Most small farms are not interested in raising a male animal of any sort because of the feed costs or, in the case of a bull, the possible danger. But Vincent is a sweet guy. He grew up with lots of individual attention like having his belly rubbed and a nice scratch behind the ears. He doesn’t challenge fences and jumps readily into the back of a trailer for quick, easy transport (plus I think he knows what might be awaiting him on the other end of a trailer ride). Even now he receives the choicest of goodies in his food bowl.

Willow knew something was up. She spent a long time arranging and rearranging her rooms….

…with just a bit of nibble of the good hay as she went about her business.

Then when he arrived, she promptly laid down and pretended to be asleep.

After a bit of bumping and nosing from him, she got up and sashayed around the palace. Wiggling her bottom for all the world to notice.

And he notice, he did!

Since then they have been very “together”. Eating side-by-side. Sleeping closely. Rearranging the hay in the palace. He is very attentive. He serenades her with quiet, little piggy tunes that only she can hear~ throaty grunts, clicking teeth; like a male siren from Greek mythology.

In 3 weeks time we will watch for the signs that tell us his mission was accomplished and she is “in the family way”.  Piglets in March? How lovely!
