More snow

We received about 5 inches of snow over night. The temperatures are in the teens and the high today was supposed to be 23 but I don’t think it’s going to make it to 20 degrees. It’s been remarkably cold for this time of year. And the animals have been plowing through the stored hay.

We are so fortunate that the hay was magnificent this summer and very plentiful. Easily obtainable right now. We have a barn full of hay but I’m thinking that I will purchase several more bales over the next several weeks and feed that to the cows and pigs while the hay is still inexpensive. And save our stored hay for later use. If the temperatures stay this low for the bulk of the winter, we might be looking at a shortage come spring. I don’t want to be caught searching for hay in April with hungry animals and the ground still frozen.

Do you see two very fat piggies snuggled up to one another for warmth under the snow?  Not sure why they don’t use their pig palace to sleep. Pigs!

A quick check of the roosters show no frozen combs and some pretty heavy bodies. The chickens seem to be weathering out the extreme cold. They actually receive more good food in the form of cracked corn and table scraps in the winter than the other seasons.

We are expecting more snow this morning then a nasty wind from the northeast is to begin blowing this afternoon. The lows tonight are supposed to be in the negatives again. I’d better get busy. There are animals to feed, waters to check and more hay and straw to dole out. Yikes!

What’s for supper: Baked ham and steamed broccoli with melted cheese and mashed potatoes~ of course. And I think I’m going to make a cake. Cold temperatures also means cold chores and cold children.

Weather: A 50 percent chance of snow. Areas of blowing snow before 11 am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 21. Wind chill values as low as -9. Windy, with a northeast wind 21 to 26 mph becoming north 27 to 32 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. Tonight a 20 percent chance of snow before 11 pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around -10. Wind chill values as low as -35. Windy, with a northwest wind 22 to 32 mph decreasing to 9 to 19 mph. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph.
