It’s snowing again. It’s not entirely snow. It’s kind of a snow/ rain mix.

The cows have slowed their eating. With the milder temperatures, they are back into their usual eating patterns~ about a bale a day each instead of almost two bales a day per cow.

We even have a whole week of above freezing temperatures in the forecast. That means spring is coming albeit slowly. Yippee!

Our official snowfall for this winter so far is 80 inches. The translation from snow to standing water is about 1:10~ that’s one inch of water for every 10 inches of snow. We don’t have all 80 inches on the ground at this second. But we do have about 4.5 feet on the level in our pastures. (Quick! What is that in inches?)

So these warmish days and below freezing temperatures at night will hopefully diminish the snow pack a bit at a time. Plus, I think we are supposed to have a nice breeze out of the south.

I’ve seen some thaws come all at once. One hot day makes for quick snow melt. And if the ground below the snow is still frozen, there is no place for the run off to go. Standing water in pastures; water streaming into streets and country lanes and overwhelming city sewers and trickling into basements. It’s a huge mess.

Those types of spring thaws make for unhappy folks.
