It’s snowing again. It’s not entirely snow. It’s kind of a snow/ rain mix.
The cows have slowed their eating. With the milder temperatures, they are back into their usual eating patterns~ about a bale a day each instead of almost two bales a day per cow.
We even have a whole week of above freezing temperatures in the forecast. That means spring is coming albeit slowly. Yippee!
Our official snowfall for this winter so far is 80 inches. The translation from snow to standing water is about 1:10~ that’s one inch of water for every 10 inches of snow. We don’t have all 80 inches on the ground at this second. But we do have about 4.5 feet on the level in our pastures. (Quick! What is that in inches?)
So these warmish days and below freezing temperatures at night will hopefully diminish the snow pack a bit at a time. Plus, I think we are supposed to have a nice breeze out of the south.
I’ve seen some thaws come all at once. One hot day makes for quick snow melt. And if the ground below the snow is still frozen, there is no place for the run off to go. Standing water in pastures; water streaming into streets and country lanes and overwhelming city sewers and trickling into basements. It’s a huge mess.
Those types of spring thaws make for unhappy folks.
Rhett is back to his frisky self. He has made a full recovery. Rachael has, too.
Y’all have a lovely day!
Today’s count: 8 eggs! Yippee!!!
What’s for supper: Scalloped ham and potatoes and green beans with sauteed onions and mushrooms.
Weather: Scattered snow showers before 11am, then a slight chance of rain showers. Patchy fog before 11am. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 42. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. Tonight mostly cloudy, with a low around 21. Light and variable wind becoming north around 6 mph after midnight.
I love the picture of the frost on the nail or post at the beginning of this post. It is lovely, although very cold, I’m sure.

Brrrr. You’d think a person would get used to this cold after a few years~ but I’m a baby. This is a picture of one of those metal grounding posts that you use for your electric fencing. You can kinda tell which side the sun shines on it~ when it shines. š Thanks for visiting! Come back anytime!

I live in Oregon. It rarely snows here in my part of Oregon. Except this year. We’ve had quite a bit. I’m tired of it with the small amount (comparatively) that we have had. So, if you are in a snowy place…….Yikes!

I’m in Salem, the capitol. It’s south of Portland, down the Willamette Valley. Before this house, we were living in the foothills of the Cascade mountains, so we had a little higher elevation, cooler nights, a little frost, and a shorter growing season. It still wasn’t severe like the east side of Oregon, but still different than the fabled Willamette Valley–end of the Oregon Trail, promised land for pioneers and all:)

Oh yes- the Willamette. It has a reputation for being the Garden of Eden even around here š I’m jealous! You can probably grow ANYTHING you want!

I’m hoping so, since our garden is so much smaller than the old one was–so I’m hoping for a huge crop from every inch!
