We are definitely back in the eggs business. The hens have been performing marvelously. I have contacted a handful of families to give them the good news. Everyone is happy. Fresh eggs are a spring tonic. Even if the weather hasn’t decided it’s really spring.
Willow loves eggs and she is due with her big family in just a few days. So I don’t want to sell too many and not have enough for our sweet girl. The home grown eggs are good for her too.
This is not a very good picture of her standing next to Vincent. Even though it’s about 3 o’clock in the afternoon, the western sky is dark with another incoming snow band and the sun is weak behind the clouds.

The boys and I have been doing some clean up in the pig palace in preparation for Willow’s farrowing. It has snowed everyday, but we’ve been able to move the trailer and clean up around the pen. A gentleman came out to the farm with a skid steer to move a lot of the snow away from the pig yard. Now we can see her from the house. There will be another delivery of hay Wednesday morning. It will be a big, glorious bale of grass/ alfalfa hay that she can burrow into and set up housekeeping. When broken down, the big bale should cover the entire pig yard and palace. Willow will have lots of bedding material since she it looks like she is determined to deliver out in the open.
Then we will watch the weather. The long term forecast is for warm-ish days and cold nights.
Spring is slowly arriving, though you could never tell by the temperatures or the snow. The sun is starting to push back against winter in earnest. It’s light later in the evenings now and the time changes to daylight savings this coming Sunday.
Right now~ at this second though….
….it’s snowing.
Today’s count: 25 eggs. Non frozen. All dirty.
What’s for supper: For the boys~ chicken pesto spaghetti, for the girls~ chicken pesto salad
