South wind 8 to 14 mph becoming west southwest. Winds could gust as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation isContinue reading “it’s snowing”

Spring showers are scheduled for all day today and the rest of the weekend. But the temperatures are to stay above freezing! That’s great news! I’m going to plant some Swiss chard and some spinach seeds in flats later today to snuggle under lights in the basement garden. We’ll put the transplants out as soonContinue reading
Just a little time off
We took a quick jaunt to “the big city” for a swim in an indoor pool, dining in restaurants, dawdling in bookstores and sleeping in without animal chores. It was a delightful 48 hours. We are lucky that we have wonderful neighbors who allow us the luxury of a few days away by caring forContinue reading “Just a little time off”
Drying out
We are drying up. We still have standing water in lots of places. But the water is definitely receding. The strong sunshine and mild breezes out of the west help a lot. Here’s our driveway just 4 days ago. Here we are this morning. Still wet but not too bad. And lookContinue reading “Drying out”
It’s raining. And I have a plethora of “things” to do inside. (Why is it when I’m busy outside, I think almost non-stop of all the “things” I have to do inside. When I finally have the moment to work inside, all I can think of are outside chores? Of course it’s the “grass-is-always-greener-where-ever-you-aren’t” syndrome.Continue reading
goodbye winter, almost
Winter has lost her grip. Though the temperatures drop below freezing almost every night, the days are warm-ish and (kinda) balmy. At least for northwest Montana. Of course when the snow melts fast, it leaves a lot of water behind. Plus, we had extremely cold temperatures in December before the snow fell. So I’m sureContinue reading “goodbye winter, almost”
Getting ready
Willow worked on her house all day today. Moving the hay just so. Picking great mouthfuls and placing the hay in special spots that only she could determine was right. She stopped just long enough to eat. Then worked some more. Then with a great heave, she lowered her magnificent self deep into the hay.Continue reading “Getting ready”
Not spring yet
We are definitely back in the eggs business. The hens have been performing marvelously. I have contacted a handful of families to give them the good news. Everyone is happy. Fresh eggs are a spring tonic. Even if the weather hasn’t decided it’s really spring. Willow loves eggs and she is due with her bigContinue reading “Not spring yet”
A front out of the east
We had another front blow into our valley while we were at church. Lots of snow and winds right out of the east. No one is impressed. I took a bit of video looking toward the north where the big red barn and our sweet Maisy and Maggie are snuggled. If you turn up the soundContinue reading “A front out of the east”
It rained all day. Rained. Then snowed. Then rained again. This kind of weather pattern really reminds me of spring. But I don’t think winter is over. February is the cruelest month. She warms up and blows warm southern breezes across our pastures and lures me into thinking that we might have an early spring.Continue reading
